Our Long Journey (a short novel)
We wish we could say it was a walk in the park or that the universe conspired in our favor to make things happen. Being together, and staying together, for the past decade (yes, since 2013), meant that we had to overcome one-too-many hurdles in our relationship. The distance, culture, religion, language, careers, pandemic... what haven’t we overcome? But we digress. This journey has brought us exactly where we need to be at exactly the right time.
We started as long-distance friends in July 2013 when we met each other by chance on the internet. For some nerdy reason, our first conversation was about sitting for the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). We started our journey by exchanging study notes in Quantitative Reasoning, and not much later, we began exchanging love notes professing our undying devotion to each other.
But it wasn't until a year and a half later that we had our first date - under the full moon, walking hand in hand on Lakshman Jula Bridge over the River Ganges in Rishikesh. Leona came to India to study yoga, and Parth safely delivered her from the New Delhi Airport to Vinyasa Yoga School. Funny enough, we've been together for so long that the bridge has since been closed to the public due to safety concerns. And somewhere along the way, we got distracted from pursuing postgraduate studies...until now.
India and the Philippines are geographically more than 5,000 kilometers away. But more than the physical distance, our individual backgrounds were perhaps two polar ends of the spectrum of life. We are neither peas in a pod nor birds of a feather. So naturally, our varying perspectives make for interesting conversations. As individually distinct as we are, we soon learned valuable life skills from our long-distance relationship, like how to communicate clearly and respectfully with the person that you love.
And so, for the last 10 years, not a day had gone by when we didn't speak to each other. No matter how big or small our emotions felt, we had to talk about them. We have learned that almost every crisis can be solved by sitting down and speaking calmly and rationally to come up with a solution.
In 2022, nine years into the relationship, we decided that it’s time for us to ditch the distance. We both signed up to postgraduate programmes (like we originally planned 9 years ago) so we can finally experience what it’s like to live in the same city. In June of that same year, Leona moved to Sydney and within 7 months, Parth followed. We have been inseparable since. And we’ve finally decided to end our very long engagement to chart our new course: marriage!
We would be so honored if you could come and celebrate with us on our wedding day.
Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
